Business-to-business (B2B) and Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) are technologies that enable the automated exchange of business transactions such as orders, invoices, and other business documents between disparate applications and different business entities by means of telecommunication.
The major benefits of EDI are fewer errors and faster cycle times, resulting in lower inventory and improved bottom line. Without EDI, digitization and JIT (Just In Time) production would be impossible.
EDI/B2B nowadays is widely used and in many industries such as automotive and fast moving consumer goods (FMCG), there is no alternative to EDI. Businesses who want to trade with major players in those industries have to adopt EDI technologies otherwise supply contracts are awarded to other companies who are willing to adapt to modern and competitive business practices.
Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) and Business to Business (B2B) Services enable organisations to participate in EDI exchanges. The use of a Managed Service is an alternative to implementing and operating your own EDI/B2B software. Commerce-Connections offers a wide range of traditional EDI and B2B Services to suit the individual needs of our clients.
The services range from an entry level browser-based WebForms solution with many ready-made trading hub connections to a full integration solution for handling high volumes of data. Additionally, there is the option for customized translations maps, bespoke software integration and dedicated B2B portals.
The CCXEDI Service enables full application integration but does not require onsite B2B software.
Please select from the range of services or software options or to find out which solutions suits your business best, or simply contact us to discuss the best option for your business.
After its 20 year presence in the UK, Commerce-Connections will bring its highly acclaimed Cloud Enterprise Network (CEN) service to China and Hong Kong thanks to cooperation with Alibaba Cloud. The CEN service will allow fast and secure commercial document transfer between domestic and global trading partners and is specifically tailored to suit China, Hong Kong and the UK’s eCommerce requirements for Business-to-Business (B2B)/Electronic Data Interchange (EDI).
By using Alibaba Cloud’s services, Commerce-Connections can send commercial documents in and out of China and Hong Kong, securely and confidently. Commerce-Connections is now able to avoid such issues as connection drops and data loss that are usually met when dealing with alternative CEN providers handling communication worldwide.
Hong Kong, a leader in manufacturing, now provides a CEN service in Frankfurt. This allows EDI to be translated for correspondence with Europe and the rest of the world. Similarly, the CEN service in China means that you can transfer data both locally and globally whilst complying with B2B global standards. Irrespective of the protocols being used in the local area, such as AS2 or FTPS, Commerce-Connections offers a truly secure local delivery translation service.
The main benefit of the Commerce-Connections gateway is that data is gathered at a local hub before being sent out or received internationally. In other words, there is a collection point and centralised delivery from Commerce-Connections UK, and a centralised delivery from both China and Hong Kong, which is key to assist with security and peace of mind.
Commerce-Connections aims to make CEN migration a simple process while ensuring minimal, if any, business disruption. Below are the basic steps taken during a CEN migration:
As a channel partner with Alibaba Cloud, Commerce-Connections will be actively involved with SAP data integrations for companies trading globally, from within China. As we are an existing business partner with SAP SE, the expertise and technologies we have developed, over 20 years in the industry, are perfectly suited to overcome the Supply Chain Data Integration challenges companies face when sending business documents to and from mainland China.
Together with Alibaba, we aim to bridge the gap for companies wishing to trade securely, efficiently and reliably between mainland China and the rest of the world.
CEN technology has been helping companies better manage their supply chain for decades. However, many experience issues that impact their bottom-line, including:
That’s why you want to be sure you are using the CEN that is the most reliable, efficient and cost-effective.
Commerce-Connections B2B/EDI Translation Service is a cost effective alternative to implementing your own B2B EDI software.
The outsourced translation service, CCXEDI (Network-Based Translation) allows you to quickly and easily implement business-to-business (B2B) trading relationships with minimum investment in additional hardware, software or IT resources.
The service is delivered from a high performance B2B Server and maintained by our EDI and network specialists. This will allow you to focus on your core business.
Who should use the service?
The B2B/EDI Translation Service is the solution for organisations that seek a fully integrated and automated B2B solution but don't want to operate their own B2B environment for cost, skills or other strategic reasons.
Customers simply need to connect via FTP(s), AS/2 to the Service Center Mailbox and up/download their agreed in-house files. This process can be fully automated.
Commerce-Connections aims to make VAN migration a simple process while ensuring minimal, if any, business disruption.
Below are the basic steps taken during a VAN migration:
As manufacturers, retailers and distributors recognise the importance of working closely together to improve operational efficiency and service levels, and as competition becomes fiercer and margins continue to shrink, the way information is managed and shared is becoming a critical issue for industry executives to address.
To achieve competitive advantage by eliminating loss of revenue from incorrect product information, suppliers and retailers need to communicate in a more efficient manner.
Global Data Synchronization (GDS) a collaborative electronic commerce strategy is a worldwide initiative intended to resolve product data inaccuracies among trading partners.
Global Data Synchronization has been implemented using a Global Data Synchronization Network (GDSN), where country-specific data pools – such as 1SYNC or other mostly GS1 operated or dominated data pools provide a GDSN compliant Service.
Those data pools are able to register GTIN information in the GS1 Global Registry™. The advantage of this is that once registered, GTIN information can be published to any trading partner world-wide that subscribes to a GDSN certified data pool.
Other more dynamic approaches for Data Synchronisation are more pragmatic avoiding the highly expensive data pools which have formed a monopoly. Often it is not necessary to register GTIN information worldwide and all the overhead in infrastructure may not be justified.
The alternative approach consists of direct connections between the parties (retailers and suppliers) via supplier portals and EDI links which allows the capture of product information among other functions. A supplier can choose to enter product information manually into the portal, upload a spreadsheet (CSV) or transmit using EDI/XML messages.
Both approaches make strategic sense and Commerce-Connections supports either option. For trading partner portal solutions please follow this link to learn more about the CC Portal Services or the CC Data-Sync Service.

Supermarkets face the task of accurately monitoring refrigeration and freezer temperatures. This is vital for the safety of the food-buying public. Historically, supermarkets have relied on staff to read temperature probes manually, leading to the possibility for human error and time consuming. This, in turn, can lead to large amounts of food wasted with the obvious increase in costs.
Food poisoning organisms can multiply quickly in foods such as meat, fish, poultry, rice, milk, cream and eggs (these are called high-risk foods). It is paramount that all food in supermarkets is kept at the right temperature. Consumers of supermarkets have been made ill when food has not been stored correctly. Legally frozen food must be maintained and stored in line with the manufacturer's instructions.
Commerce-Connections has developed a system which can monitor and analyse temperature across the large fixed refrigerators and freezers used in store. Our wireless Smart sensors transmit every 5 minutes ensuring constant awareness of any changes complemented with our user-friendly monitoring interface. An alert can be sent to the store manager as well as an engineer if and whenever it is triggered.
Our service drives quality throughout a store environment and at the same time eases the process of following the below regulations:
• Regulation (EC) No. 852/2004 Hygiene of foodstuffs
• The Food Hygiene (England) Regulations 2006 (Schedule 4)
Measuring and monitoring of temperature is paramount in all areas of a care home. From food storage and climate monitoring to infection control and regular checking of water temperature.
Fighting Infection
The HSA (Health Saving Association) in the UK classifies elderly people as a high-risk group. Legislation has changed recently, so even the smaller care homes need to keep constant safety checks and ensure there is an adequate risk assessment in place including temperature control.
Climate change is already affecting the spread of infectious diseases throughout the world, as an example in human health, there is a direct risk from water pathogens which can lead to dengue fever, malaria, cholera and, increasingly in the UK, Legionnaires disease. All are linked to warmer temperatures. Within a care home environment with potential restrictions of movement for the elderly in a confined area it is imperative that the temperature does not become too warm.
Our Smart temperature sensors can be used for running water and pipe surfaces as well as environment monitoring – a popular choice for caretakers or building engineers who often bear the brunt of testing and the care home paying for a call-out or service check-up.
Food Safety
The health and age of residents obviously makes them more vulnerable to hazards like food-born bacteria which can be prevented by storing and cooking foods at safe temperatures. There is the ‘danger zone’ of food safety, when in storage cold food should not go beyond the temperature of 4.0°C and hot food should never be lower than 60°C.
There is the very important matter of accuracy. For example, the storage temperature of chilled food is especially critical, so food thermometers should have an accuracy of +/- 0.5°C. Our smart temperature sensors are life-time calibrated to even +/- 0.2°C. Not only are the sensors more accurate they are also automated, compared to manually recorded thermometer readings, which could lead to human error and would have to be calibrated on a regular basis.
Record Keeping
Another factor to take into consideration is what to do with a temperature once it has been taken. In recent years, European legislation has demanded regular food temperature recording. Taking accurate temperatures alone is not enough - Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) food safety regulations require enhanced due diligence on the recording of results at every stage.
In legionella testing, the sheer number of water points and outlets even in an average-sized building is only matched by the volume of records required to monitor them. All this can be a logistical nightmare for managers resulting in trolling through mountains of paper, which is why many are turning to paperless systems that have the added bonus of reducing the risk of human error.

From the Frozen to the Fragile
Food is being transported over longer distances, from producer to consumer; this distance is often measured by ‘food miles’. In the UK, comparatively little of the food we consume comes from local producers; much will have been transported over great distances. There is a need to consider the environmental conditions that the goods will endure during transit. Will the goods go through high-humidity zones or extreme low temperature zones for example?
Temperature breaches in the cold chain need to be flagged up quickly and reliably. Our efficient and user-friendly data loggers and Smart sensors help to ensure accurate and effective cold chain management.
Commerce-Connections offers a chance to validate products at the point of use and while in transit, which will show clearly and unmistakably whether a product has been adversely affected by a temperature breach.
Our complete monitoring service introduces accountability measures into the shipping and handling stages of the temperature-sensitive cold chain. By providing prominent visual notification to shipping personnel of the presence of monitoring equipment, alarms and historical records encourage proper handling and transport of temperature-sensitive products.

Temperature is the crucial variable for wine makers and collectors. It is likely that relatively few wines are spoiled by low humidity, but many are ruined through storage at high and/or variable temperature and humidity levels. The rate of chemical reactions within wine increases as the temperature increases, which encourage the loss of alcohol and aroma and flavour compounds due to volatilisation. Low temperatures will result in a poor extraction of colour and tannins in red wines and can also cause sluggish fermentations and the production of high levels of ethyl acetate. High levels of humidity are damaging to labels and packaging and can lead to the drying out of the cork.
Our CC Air service monitors temperature and humidity quickly, easily and cost-effectively. CC Air offers precise temperature monitoring features focused on quality control: detailed time/temperature histories, highlighted events above or below specified temperature ranges, and full documentation. CC Air secures winemakers with sustainable management & monitoring practice on quality improvement and cost decrease for energy usage.

Pharmaceutical temperature monitoring guidelines issued by the FDA (North America) and MHRA (UK) dictate that controlled drugs and vaccines stored in pharmacy fridges must meet benchmarks that deliver maximum efficacy and shelf-life. In addition, pharmacy fridge temperature monitoring systems are subject to regular audits for compliance to these guidelines as an integral part of the regulatory process.
To meet such strict protocols a comprehensive regime of pharmacy temperature monitoring and accurate record-keeping is the basis of the compliance strategy for any facility storing controlled drugs and vaccines. Manual pharmacy temperature monitoring at the level of detail needed is time-consuming, a poor use of highly-qualified resources and lacks the essential accuracy.
Commerce-Connections' web-based radio frequency temperature monitoring systems deliver accuracy, regulatory compliance and totally absolute audit trails to global customers in pharmacy or those who specialise in pharmaceutical manufacturing. Using web-based technology, data and records are securely accessible 24/7 anywhere in the world on any device running on a web-browser or an app.

For restaurants and food service providers, the quality, freshness and safety of the food they serve is of the highest importance. Increasingly complex menus, vast numbers of food service suppliers from domestic and international locations and new government regulations are making it ever more critical to ensure that fresh, frozen and processed foods have been stored and cooked properly. Fresh produce could sit on restaurant surfaces and corridors before being attended to by staff within a busy kitchen and experience high temperatures that can reduce quality and potentially lead to increased risks of harmful bacteria.
Commerce-Connections offers the ability to track produce from transport to delivery consistently through our data loggers and Smart sensors, both devices operate on the same system. This prevents staff from falsifying information and preparation for unexpected visits from food inspectors is not as time consuming. In addition, uncompromised audit trails are instantly available.
The CC Air service simplifies keeping to regulations such as:
Regulation (EC) No 852/2004 of the European Parliament and of the Council on the hygiene of foodstuffs
The Food Hygiene (England) Regulations 2006 (Schedule 4)

Legionnaires’ disease occurs as a result of infections caused by the legionellaceae family of bacteria.
It is a form of pneumonia which results in around 250 identified cases a year and can prove fatal, especially to the elderly or those prone to respiratory problems or with impaired immune systems.
Legionnaires’ disease is contracted by inhaling small droplets of water suspended in air which contain the legionella bacterium.
Legionella bacteria occur naturally in surface water and soils etc but can also proliferate within man-made environments such as cooling towers, swimming pools, domestic hot-water systems and showers, ice making machine, refrigerated cabinets, whirlpool spas, hot springs, fountains, dental equipment, industrial coolants and many more.
Proliferation of the bacteria typically occurs between 20°C - 45°C and is assisted by the presence of suitable nutrients present in dirt, sludge and scale as well as conditions of poor water flow and stagnation occurring in water systems.
In the UK employers are required to control the risk of exposure to legionella bacteria in accordance with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations. This is achieved by following the Approved Code of Practice (ACoP) L8 the Control of Legionella (Bacteria in Water Systems) and in general these require the employer to conduct the following:
Whether you run a commercial office, school or are a manufacturer, monitoring water usage is becoming more important every day, especially with the growing strain on our waterways and changeable weather patterns.
By collecting temperature information regularly to monitor water tank temperatures you can be assured your tank’s environment will not be storing any problems. With configurable temperature settings our Smart sensor service will monitor water temperature to confirm it is kept within guidelines.
Embedded alerts will also tell you of any drifts in temperature, so you can keep on top of the situation and maintain a healthy water environment. Alerts can be sent by email to appropriate personnel.
